The new Windows Mobile Phone 7 handsets have been launched in the UK.

The handsets are now on sale and are available from O2, Orange, T-Mobile and Three and currently available are the HTC HD 7, HTC 7 Mozart and the Samsung Omnia 7.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s chief executive, said at a press conference in New York: “The difference with Windows Phone 7 isn’t just what you’re going to do with the phone, but how you’re going to do it. We’ve focused in on the way real people want to use their phone when they’re on the go. We’ve set out to build a phone that is thoroughly modern.”

Microsoft has seen a huge response to the new mobile operating service, so much so, that it is supposedly releasing its successor Windows 8 in 2012. The announcement was leaked in a blog post on a Dutch website but has since been removed.

Windows 7 is based around the concept of “hubs”, to organise contacts, photos, music, videos and Xbox games, and “live tiles”, which are used instead of icons to keep the user constantly updated about new emails, messages and social network status updates.

Its’ marketing and promotion campaign has cost $400 million (£250 million) with the high hopes that the platform will help it to claw back market share from rivals such as Apple and Google, as well as Research in Motion, which makes the BlackBerry.

The first update to the newly launched Windows Live Essentials for Windows 7 will be released in June next year.

O2 is offering the HTC HD7 which features a large 4.3 inch touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 16GB of storage, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with flash and HD video recording, GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi.

Orange is selling the HTC 7 Mozart which features a 3.7 inch touchscreen, 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with flash and HD video recording, SRS and Dolby Mobile sound, GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi.

Orange, T-Mobile and Three are offering the Samsung Omnia 7 which has a 4 inch touchscreen, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and HD video recording, 1GHz processor, 8GB of storage, GPS, 3G and Wi-Fi 33.

Vodafone will be offering the LG Optimus 7 and HTC 7 Trophy from November.
